VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: Amy Goodman

Amy Goodman is Development Officer – and was Director last year – for Sanitree, a social enterprise operating in India which tackles period poverty by employing women from vulnerable backgrounds to sew and sell reusable menstrual pads. Amy, a member of West London Reform Synagogue,  led an expansion to Jaipur, partnering with a local NGO and creating a workshop employing 22 women. The workshop not only gives the women a source of income, but it offers skills-based training and personal development activities to engage the wider community.

Amy’s social work and period activism is not just limited to India but Sanitree have been at the forefront of the fight against period poverty in Scotland, where Amy is based at university. Amy coordinated Sanitree’s campaign to lobby the Scottish Government to support the Bill for free period products, organising a rally and making a speech outside Scottish Parliament. The campaigning reversed the Scottish government’s initial opposition to the Bill, and Scotland is now the first country in the world to make universal access to free menstrual products a legal provision.

Sanitree are currently in an exciting phase of relocating their workshop and employing new beneficiaries. They are raising funds for the training materials for the sewing and sales training of these new beneficiaries.
