Hundreds of Manchester schoolchildren and members of the public will be learning about the Jewish way of life this month following the launch of the Jewish Living Experience (JLE) exhibition at the city’s cathedral on Monday.

Children from all over the region will attend the JLE, which is sponsored by Mark Addlestone. It is aimed primarily at school groups and enables visitors to gain an insight into Judaism as a living faith. The exhibition, organised by Education Development Manager Sara Perlmutter, supports the teaching of Judaism in line with all agreed religious education and citizenship curriculums.

Following the launch, Board of Deputies Vice President Sheila Gewolb said: “As vice president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews and chair of its Community and Education Division, I am delighted that the Jewish Living Experience exhibition is being held in Manchester Cathedral.

“Over the next two weeks hundreds of non-Jewish school children will have the opportunity to learn about our beliefs, culture and practices, which is fundamental in promoting understanding and respect for our community.

“I would like to thank Dean Rogers and his staff and the Greater Manchester Jewish Representative Council for their cooperation in organising the exhibition, also the team of Jewish volunteers who will be running the school sessions.”

The event was attended by the Lord Mayor of Manchester, Eddie Newman, the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, Warren Smith; the Dean of Manchester Cathedral, The Very Revd Rogers Govender; Sharon Bannister, President of the Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester and Region; Jeremy Michaelson, Chair of Education for the Representative Council; and Board of Deputies Vice President Sheila Gewolb.
