Glorious Pasts and Hopeful Futures
by Vivian Wineman posted in Community

As a London based organisation there is always a danger that the Board can be seen as being London centric. As someone whose roots are in the provinces I am particularly aware of this and of the extraordinary richness of the cultural life of some of our regional communities. I have been very keen therefore that Honorary Officers of the Board should visit such communities and I always enjoy doing so myself. This week I was in Liverpool and it takes a visit to that city to become aware of its extraordinarily rich history. Read More

A Hidden Gem of Jewish Heritage
by Marcelle Palmer posted in Community

Plymouth synagogue is an important part of Jewish heritage in this country. It is the oldest still functioning Ashkenazi synagogue in the UK (indeed, in the English speaking world), and boasts a small but beautiful Grade II* listed Georgian building, which is well worth a visit. And last week marked the 250th anniversary of the founding of the synagogue. Read More

On the Up? Jewish Community Statistics 2010
by Daniel Vulkan posted in Community

The Board of Deputies has just published Britains Jewish Community Statistics 2010. Whilst the 2011 census results, expected towards the end of this year, will provide a snapshot of the Jewish population, and a comparison with the 2001 census may indicate what changes there have been in the population over the intervening decade, it is only by looking in detail at life events (births, marriages, divorces and deaths) that we can get an idea of how those changes have occurred. Britains Jewish Living Expo
by Jon Benjamin posted in Community

As with the premature publication of Mark Twains obituary, reports of the demise of the British Jewish community are greatly exaggerated. The oft quoted statistic, that the number of Jews in Britain in the 1950s was somewhere around 450,000 and has now shrunk to 270,000, is now widely considered by experts to overstate the first figure and understate the second. New Home For A Three Hundred Year Old Sefer Torah
by Press Office posted in Community

The Director of the Boards Community Issues Division, Colin Spanjar, has presented part of a 300 year old Sefer Torah to Yavneh College in Borehamwood. The scroll was found by a family clearing the contents of their late aunt\'s home in London, where it appears to have lain unnoticed in an attic cupboard for over 60 years. They were initially unaware of the significance of what they had found and contacted the Board just before Shavuot... Read More

Forgotten Cemeteries
by Colin Spanjar posted in Community

One of the major pieces of work that occupies my time at the Board is that of the forgotten Jewish Cemeteries. From the re-admittance of the Jews by Cromwell in 1656, Jewish communities appeared across the country, including in places where there is little or no discernable Jewish presence today. As a community we have lived and left memories throughout the UK; from Penzance in the South West all the way to Sunderland in the North East, vibrant communities have existed throughout the last 356 years. Election 2012: Being part of the solution

Heard the one about the old men, the stuffy room, and British-Jewrys foremost representative body? I thought so. Tuesday 3 January was supposed to have been the most depressing day of the year. Its understandable, I guess. Most people had been off work for a few days, enjoyed family time and celebrated the New Year. Election 2012: Young, Free and Single Minded

Earlier this year I led a delegation to meet Greg Clark, the minister responsible for the governments Big Society initiative. My colleagues included representatives of a number of Jewish organisations, all of them doing tremendous work in many different areas in the community. But the theme that most gripped our hosts was one that we almost took for granted; the opportunities and responsibilities that our young people have to develop leadership skills, and the enthusiasm with which they grasp them from a relatively early age. As the representative organisation for the community, highly respected by government and in wider society, many of the most important issues confronting British Jewry are addressed by the Board of Deputies.
